Introduction

The International Commission for History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions is affiliated to the International Committee of Historical Sciences. It was founded in 1936 and its main aim is the discussion and publication of research into the representative and parliamentary institutions.

The Commission is made up of university professors and officers of parliaments of many diverse European, Asian and American countries; being Italy, UK, Belgium and Spain the divisions with the largest number of members.

Conference information

The Commission has chosen the City of Cadiz as home to its 63rd Conference, which will form part of the programme marking the Cortes of Cadiz of 1812 bicentennial. Therefore, papers are especially invited on the main conference theme The CORTES of CADIZ and the FIRST SPANISH LIBERAL CONSTITUTIONALISM, and its INTERNATIONAL IMPACT – a theme established in order to acknowledge the value of the influence of the Cortes in the models for Liberal constitutions both in Europe and the new Latin American states.

Papers are also invited on the following conference themes:

  • Parliamentary officers – elected representatives and officials
  • Representative assemblies in the Old Regime – forms and representation
  • Reactionaries vs. Liberals – propaganda elements (the press, leaflets, symbols and imagery)
  • Modern Parliaments – census suffrage and equal suffrage
  • Other Constitutions in 1812

Paper Submission

A copy of the paper proposal should be submitted in Din-A4 format and have a minimum of 2,000 characters (single space). Proposals must be accompanied by a copy stating the title, name(s) of the author(s), contact details (mailing address, city, telephone number and e-mail address), academic/professional activity, name of institution or company and a brief CV.

Paper proposals will be accepted in Spanish, English, French or German.

The deadline for submission of proposals is 29th February 2012 and paper proposals must be submitted to diana.repeto@uca.es, diego.caro@uca.es. All proposals will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee. Relevance to the conference theme(s) and quality will be considered when reviewing submissions. Authors will be notified of the acceptance of proposals before 31st March 2012.

Those who have received the notification of acceptance will be required to submit the paper by 15th June 2012 at the latest.

Paper Submission (Guidelines for Authors)

  1. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a copy stating the title, name(s) of the author(s), contact details (mailing address, city, telephone number and e-mail address), academic/professional activity, name of institution or company and a brief CV.
  2. Presentation of papers in the Conference sessions is mandatory for final publication of papers.
  3. All manuscripts must not exceed 35,000 characters, spaces and notes all included.
  4. A copy of the manuscript (carefully checked) on A4 size paper must be sent on paper and another on CD. Full texts should be in Microsoft Word version (or compatible). CDs must be labelled with the name of author(s), title, and name of programme and version used.
  5. Format and size:
    - A4 size paper (210 x 297 mm).
    - Footnote citations should be added at the foot or bottom of the same page, and listed numerically and consecutively.
    - Pages should be numbered at the bottom centre of pages.
  6. All figures provided to illustrate the text should be numbered consecutively and given a brief caption. Illustrations must be limited to 4.
  7. References given at the end of the text must conform to the following style:
    a) Book citations:
    Author: place the surname first and then the name.
    Title: italicize the title.
    Volume (if any): use the abbreviation vol.
    Place a comma between publisher’s name, place of publication and year of publication.
    Pagination: use the abbreviations p. or pp. to designate page numbers.
    b) Chapter of a book, contributions, introductions or forewords:
    Author: idem book citation.
    Title of the chapter: in quotes and in bold. The title should not be underlined.
    Title of the book: italicized the title of the book.
    Volume (if any): use the abbreviation vol.
    Place a comma between publisher’s name, place of publication and year of publication.
    Pagination: use the abbreviations p. or pp. to designate page numbers.
    c) Journal article:
    Author: idem book citation.
    Article title: in quotes and in bold. The title should not be underlined.
    Publication title (journal, magazine, etc.): italicize the title.
    Volumes: include volume number (issue numbers) and publication date.
    Pagination: use the abbreviations p. or pp. to designate page numbers.
